Safer Roads Start With Me is a community‑driven initiative focused on increasing awareness and promoting safer road use throughout our region. Over the years, many residents and families have shared concerns about road safety – from limited visibility of pedestrians walking between dusk and dawn, to speeding on side roads where children travel to and from school.

Families in our community want to feel confident taking an afternoon walk, biking around the block, or letting their children play outside without worrying about:

  • Vehicles traveling at unsafe speeds
  • Distracted driving, including cell phone use
  • Drivers adjusting radios or looking away from the road
  • Lack of eye contact or communication between drivers and pedestrians at crossings
  • Pedestrians crossing without ensuring drivers see them

This campaign began when a group of Shawnigan Lake residents, together with South Cowichan Community Policing staff and Directors, met with the Ministry of Transportation and the RCMP. Their shared goal was simple: create safer roads, safer streets, and safer communities.

We welcome your ideas on how to improve road safety in our area. If you’re interested in getting involved, consider volunteering with Speed Watch or one of our road safety programs.

Safety doesn’t happen by accident — it takes all of us working together.
