Cowichan Community Policing & Engagement Society would love your help cheering on Cowichan Valley emergency services locals Kayla Carlson & Wes Richens as they bike across Vancouver Island to raise money for Pediatric Cancer research and support programs. Kayla Carlson has been a committed Firefighter in Chemainus for the last 6 years, 2 of those also working as a paramedic. Wes Richens is a dad of 2, as well as a 7 year RCMP officer for Duncan/North Cowichan area.
These 2 individuals have been active members in bettering and supporting our community for years, and now it is time the community shows our support in return!
Tour de Rock is a two-week bicycle journey in which a team of police officers and other emergency services personnel cycle 14 days and 1200 km from the north end of Vancouver Island to the south end to raise money for childhood cancer research and support services at the Canadian Cancer Society.
- This year the tour starts in Port Hardy on September 23rd and finishes October 6th in Victoria
- Since Tour de Rock began in 1997, the Tour has raised more than $27 million dollars and sent almost 1,000 kids to Camp Goodtimes
Each participant is estimated to raise $6,000 for research and to send kids & families affected by cancer to camp.
- 20% of money raised helps send kids who have been diagnosed and their siblings to Camp Goodtimes
- 80% goes to pediatric cancer research
Kayla Carlson
- 6 year volunteer firefighter & 2 year paramedic in Chemainus
- First rider to represent Chemainus pedaling for pediatric cancer
- Personal goal to raise $15,000
- Wants to make a difference through fundraising to advance research techniques & get one step closer to a cure
- Has a grandparent in remission & Friend/Coworker (Alex Meyer) who was diagnosed

Wes Richens
- 7 year RCMP member (currently in Duncan/North Cowichan)
- personal goal to raise $20,000
- Wants to send kids to camp so that they can just be kids again (has 2 children of his own)
- Inspired by coworkers experiences & stories
- Had a friend and grandparent pass away from cancer (mother also diagnosed)

Honorary Riders
Each rider is paired up with an honorary rider:
- Honorary Riders are kids who have been touched by cancer in some way, either having been diagnosed themselves or having a sibling who has been diagnosed.
- Children and families that are part of our honorary program are invited to share their experience and personal stories of living with cancer with Cops for Cancer teams
- Lifelong friendships are often created and honorary members get to take part in unique opportunities and events with the Tours
