The province is taking measures against open burning in B.C.

Effective tomorrow, most open fires will be banned in most of the Coastal Fire Centre, which covers all of Vancouver Island, and the Lower Mainland all the way up past the Sunshine Coast.

Specifically, all Category 2 open fires are banned:

• An open fire, excluding a campfire, that burns piled material no larger than two metres high and three metres wide, or grass over an area less than 0.2 hectares (2000 square metres) in size.

This means fireworks, grass fires, and burning of materials smaller than two metres high are all prohibited.

Small campfires still permitted

However, small campfires that are a half metre high and wide are still okay, as are gas and propane cooking stoves.

The province is also reminding the public that any violations could result in tickets of over $1100, large fines, or a year in jail.
